"Ashley Hutchings is the single most important figure in English folk rock. Before that his group Fairport Convention recorded some of the best versions of my unreleased songs. Listen to the bass playing on Percy's Song to hear how great he is."

Ashley Hutchings New Album

"Street Cries"

Originally released in 2001 by Topic Records this album was originally described by the late, great John Peel as "truly great" and Ashley considers this to be one of his top five albums.
High praise indeed as he has released 94. The album features traditional songs re-interpreted lyrically and musically into the modern day. Think Romeo and Juliet into West Side Story. The cast of performers - a different vocal line-up for each track - reads like a who's who of the British folk and roots scene. Memorable performances from, among others, Cara Dillon, Steve Knightley, John Tams, Vin Garbutt, June Tabor and Dick Gaughan.
Ashley's creative re-telling of the stories, the artists' individual performances and the Banksy inspired new cover artwork completes the transformation to the modern idiom.

"From Psychedelia to Sonnets"

From Psychedelia to Sonnets, the remarkable journey of Ashley Hutchings MBE, is a new live in concert double-album featuring Ashley, Ruth Angell and Becky Mills. It is available from Talking Elephant Records. This ground-breaking album, in structure unlike anything else anyone has made, chronicles Ashley's life in words and music and is based around his book 'Words, Words, Words'.

Ashley Hutchings New Album

Ashley is currently working on an ambitious double album to be titled "Gloucester Docks Revisited and other tales of love". Considered his masterpiece by many, the album "By Gloucester Docks I Sat Down and Wept" was a love story in words and music and was released originally in 1987. It was re-released in 2013 by Talking Elephant Records to the acclaim that it deserved but didn't receive originally. A familiar story in the arts. This time Ashley looks at the story thirty years on but through the eyes of a much older man. This will be disc one. Disc two covers various stories of, and references to, love stories through the ages and in many lands. It is expected that this unique double album will be released some time in the Summer of 2018.

  • Ashley Hutchings - Liege & Lief

Liege & Lief - Fairport Convention, 1969, Island Records

"There was a lot of very whimsical stuff happening in the late '60s. We never really felt part of that. When we made Liege & Lief it was like Bergman was coming in to direct it. It was the Seventh Seal, not Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was magical, but the magic was elemental" - Ashley Hutchings, The Guardian, August, 2007, in an interview with John Harris.

  • Ashley Hutchings - By Gloucester Docks

By Gloucester Docks I sat down and wept - A love story - Ashley Hutchings, 1987, Paradise & Thorns

"Like books, there are certain albums which should never be allowed to go out of print, and this is certainly one of them. It is almost impossible to classify this memorial, so clearly does it transcend every known genre. This is partly because it incorporates every known genre" - Ian Maun. "The album is the nearest popular music has come to T.S.Eliot's The Waste Land" - Nigel Schofield.

  • Ashley Hutchings - Twangin' n' a-Traddin'

Twangin' 'n' a-Traddin' - Twangy rock meets foot-tapping folk -The Ashley Hutchings Big Beat Combo, 1994, HTD Records

"It's finally clear just how ahead of its time the album was. And there's a track called Twang me down my old mohair space-suit. How can you resist ?" - Oz Hardwick.

  • Ashley Hutchings - My Land is Your Land

My land is your land - A celebration of English and Italian cultures in music and words - Ashley Hutchings and Ernesto De Pascale, 2008, The Esoteric Record Co.

"Some of these tracks were first released back in 2008...but this release is fuller and more beautifully presented. Hutchings notes it as a favourite album of his long career and it's easy to understand why". - Jeanette Leech (Shindig).

To Ireland I Made my Way

Song Lyrics

  • So to Ireland I made my way
But it was not a settled sea
For the waves had no heart for the mission that I chose
    And they parted reluctantly

And the seagulls screamed to the skies
As they twisted their long black hoods
And the clouds burst apart and poured forth their tears
On the deck where this saviour stood

  • And the gods hung their heads like a Christ
To see priceless love come to nought
And the furies they sung out a song of regret
As they guided the boat into port

And a troubled mind in a troubled land
    Slept on a troubled bed
With trouble around and trouble behind
    And nothing but trouble ahead
